Gel or essence: which form to choose

Same marks on the label, two different jobs.

  • A gel for the body, an essence for the face.

What a gel is

A Japanese sunscreen gel is mostly water. It pours almost like a toner and turns clear as you spread it.

The gel comes in body-sized packs for that reason. It is the form to choose when the area is large.

What an essence is

Essence is a skincare word in Japan. It means a light serum, and a sunscreen essence borrows that feel: a little creamier than a gel, still far from a thick lotion.

In the Skin Aqua lineup the essences come in slim 70 g tubes. They are sized for a face and a makeup bag.

The numbers side by side

Price per 10 g shows the real gap. The gels cost less for the same amount, and the essences cost more for extras such as the pearl or the Barrier Fit formula.

UV Super Moisture Gel Twin PackGel2 × 110 g, squeeze bottle$22.50$1.02

Barrier UV EssenceEssence70 g, tube$31.40$4.49

Using both

Many buyers keep one of each. The gel goes on arms, legs and neck. The essence goes on the face, where texture under makeup matters more.

Both forms wash off with soap, so the evening routine stays the same.
